Get Shorty
Bruce Bradley ('A big fan of the blog in TEXAS!!!') sends a multi-coloured email from Dallas with a query about what American writers I enjoy.
I happened to be reading a wonderful American novel when his note arrived, Elmore Leonard's 1990 cautionary tale of Hollywood, Get Shorty. So that's my answer.
And Moby Dick, of course. But you might email me at random for some years before you found me reading it.
And An American Tragedy which I reread after watching Woody Allen's Scoop this summer. There is a peculiar homage in the movie to the rowing boat scene. My 18-year-old son then took my copy and I haven't seen it since.
There was a brilliant account of Leonard's early style by Stephen Abell in the TLS of June 23.
Replacing Judge Ilyas Khan
Is easily said, but then: darn!
Where are we to find
That Maid on his mind
Who gave his day job such charm?
